(CNN) – More than two-thirds of New York City voters feel optimistic about Mayor Bill de Blasio’s next four years in office, according to a new poll released Thursday from Quinnipiac University.
Sixty-seven percent of voters say they’re optimistic about his first term, compared to 21 percent who say they’re pessimistic, the poll shows.
De Blasio is the first new mayor the city has had in 12 years, and the first Democratic mayor in two decades.
Though the mayor has only been in office for a little more than two weeks, 53% of voters approve of the job he’s done so far, while 13% disapprove and 34% are undecided.
His approval is lowest among GOP voters, but the liberal mayor still has a positive rating among Republicans by a margin of 40% to 28%.
“New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is having a honeymoon,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
On a side note, the survey was conducted roughly around the same time de Blasio set off an Internet frenzy when he was photographed eating pizza with a fork – a big no-no in the Big Apple.
Quinnipiac interviewed 1,288 New York City voters between January 9-15. The survey’s sampling error is plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
